Hi There!
Chicken newbie here. We just got our six silkies this week. They are 2-3 weeks old, and I'm crossing my fingers the 50/50 odds work in my favor for more hens..
Our coop is a nice doghouse we will be adding nesting boxes to later on when the silkies get closer to laying, and our run area will be a 10'x20' kennel cage. We plan on getting goats next year, so the chicken pen needed to be the tougher material since the run will be in the goat area. The idea is to be able to let them roam in the larger fenced area sometimes for variety and more of a free-range feeling. If this is a baaaaahhhhd (goat pun intended) idea, please let me know!
On a personal level, my husband Jason and I are newlyweds, no children yet, but our other fur-babies include 3 ferrets (Banjo, and rescues: Coby and deaf Blondie), 3 cats (Amadeus and 2 kittens that are currently 7 weeks old that we saved at 2 weeks: Otis and Callie), and Buddy the pureblood golden retriever that someone dumped as a puppy near our house last summer - their loss! He is an incredibly sweet dog. If you count the chicks.. that is 13 animals under the roof at the moment. ...my husband sure does love me!
