Hi. I'm excited to join the site. I've learned a lot here already!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I'm not entirely new to chickens, as my family has always raised them. This is, however, the first time I have owned my own chickens.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We picked up nine chicks over the weekend at Rural King.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I have three Cornish Rocks (If Rural King is correct) and 6 assorted bantams. I'm looking forward to posting pics of the bantams to see what more experienced members think that they are.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

I stumbled across this site while looking at coop plans, etc.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Photography, scrapbooks, reading.


(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I am a seventh grade reading teacher. We have two little boys (6 and 8) and a baby girl (22 months). The children definitely have an interest in farming, even if it is just "hobby" farming. Currently, we have three dogs, two cats, fish, and the chicks. We have 15 acres and will be adding horses to the mix this summer.
 
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. You have a very good and thorough introduction. :o) Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. I hope you can figure out what your little ones are! What are your plans for your Cornish Rocks's? Cornish Rocks are most commonly used as a meat chicken, since they grow so fast and get so large that they experience leg problems and heart troubles by 8 weeks old or so.

Oh my. Long story short, I wanted Plymouth Rocks, but Rural King didn't have any. Fell in love with the Bantams-trying to resist temptation to get more. Rural King advertised the Cornish Rocks as good egg layers (brown eggs, I think it said). Not sure what to do with them, now that you said that...

I'm sad to say Rural King pulled a fast one on you. As Wyandottes7 said, Cornish Rocks, also known as Cornish cross are hybrids bred for meat production. Due to their incredible growth rates, they are ready for butchering by 7-8 weeks. If you wait much beyond that, they begin to develop all sorts of serious health problems due to their abnormal growth rates. Even if they somehow manage to reach laying age, they will never be productive layers. The best thing you can do with them is butcher them at 7-8 weeks and enjoy some excellent chicken dinners, or if you don't want to butcher them, sell them to someone who would like to have them for meat. Whatever you decide to do though, don't wait too long to do it.
