Hello Everybody,

I live in the northwest, East Wenatchee WA.

My wife bought 4 chicks back in May for my 16 year old daughter without telling me. She lost interest in July and I kinda inherited them. I’ve been thinking about getting some hens for a couple of years so I’m okay with her passing them on to me

So we have 1 Barred Rock (Tiny), 1 Buff Orpington (Piggy), 1 Silver Cuckoo Maran(Mo, short or Monique) and an Easteregger (Rolo). Our Maran started laying at 4.5mo. The rest are not laying yet. I’m guessing it’s less light with fall coming.

I’m really excited about the eggs and all the hens have names, so no ones going to be a fryer!

I bought a medium OverEZ coop and love it! Installed electricity with a heat lamp, extra light on a timer and an outlet to keep their water from freezing. From my reading I will not use the heat lamp unless it’s unusually cold. I know now I didn’t need the heat lamp now so I’ll use it late in the winter occasionally when it gets really cold.

Hobbies: Cooking, dry aging beef, charcuterie and fishing/hunting.

I found this forum looking for info on how to be a great hen keeper!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens, the pulse beat of the chicken community. Sounds like you are fast becoming a great hen keeper.

Save the heat lamp for if/when you decide to incubate some eggs or provide some warmth for a brooder if you get young chicks.

How low do winter temps get in NW Washington? Chickens take more cold than they can heat. If they have a draft free, well ventilated coop they should be fine.

If you are in an area with cougars, bears etc. you may need some electrified fencing. to keep them safe.
