Hello from Washington State.

I am curious how cold it gets in NE WA. I'm in SW WA and the winters are mild enough that I don't need heat at all. But, I'm a spoiler of all animals and birds, so I do have heat sources, and I have coops available without heat at all. I let them choose.

That being said, I have had a heat lamp break and there was glass everywhere, so no heat lamps in my coops again!!!! I use the sweeter heater. If they want warmth, they know where to go. That means I don't get eggs in the winter. I can live with that. The Happy Egg Co. has eggs as good as mine from pasture raised hens. I'm good with that.

There's some differences in opinion on heating coops in the winter. For me, our winters here in Wyoming get very cold and I don't heat at all. If your coop is ventilated and draft free, you probably won't need supplemental heating. Chicken feathers do a good job of keeping the birds warm :)

Thanks for joining us!

I purchased a few May chicks last year and had to wait quite a while for eggs... they started at different times from December to January and the last one waited all the way until March! The previous year's April chicks all started laying in August.

Have fun in your new chicken adventure and enjoy those eggs when they arrive!
