I am a very new chicken owner. Am able to have 3 in town. Bought 3 RIR. 1 is about a year and the other 2 are probably 8 months old. Got them about 5 weeks ago and so far have had 4 eggs. Don't really expect much due to season. So far I am enjoying them.

Can't let them run free due to living on busy street corner. Some day soon we will hopefully have a bigger property where we can have free roaming chickens and many other animals.

Thank you for such a wonderful website where I can hopefully learn lots on how to treat my ladies right.

To Back Yard Chickens,,, so happy to have you here. Don't worry about the free ranging, just give them a large enough run, make them some nice things to climb on, so they can look around and when you are near some open space, cut them some greens or put some nice leaves and dirt for them to scratch around in. They will like that. On days my girls are stuck inside,, I put some fresh hay in their run, then sprinkle some scratch for them. It keeps them busy moving the hay around, looking for the scratch.

GOod Luck!
