Hello!!
I am Kelsey from Tacoma, Washington. I am SO excited to be considering getting some chickens! For quite a while we have wanted to have chickens, but have always thought that since we reside within the city limits (barely, but still within), that we couldn't have any farm type animals. Well last week my husband got a wild hair (I think he has puppy fever but we can't get another pup, so he'll settle for some chicks
) and decided to dig in on the research. Come to find out we CAN have chickens!!
With restrictions, of course. I have decided to do as much research as possible on keeping chickens while we gather the funds to build our coop and start our flock!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are VERY new to chickens! We hope to have some come summer.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None, but we've learned that we can have up to 6
(3) What breeds do you have?
We aren't sure what breeds we want, or what breeds would do well in our area. I like the Easter Eggers cause they lay pretty eggs
BUT other than that, we want chickens that will continue to lay eggs throughout the winter months.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Of course we are looking forward to the eggs. Our niece would also love the idea of getting to come over and play with chickens. We are interested in how our dogs will react, and looking forward to training them to respect the chickens in hopes that we can let them be free range with our dogs (not likely, haha!) or at least be able to let the dogs outside without having them harassing the chickens in their fenced off area.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Horses, dogs and photography are my other hobbies. I have always loved horses since I was a young girl, I had to quit riding due to my own insecurities and the fact that I can't own my own horse. Our dogs are our kids and will always come first. I have had dogs since I was a kid. After my childhood dogs passed, my husband and I got our own pair and they are the best! Hubby wants to train them to herd the chickens. While my husband was overseas, I found photography to be a good distraction. It turned into a passion and I hope to finish my degree and start building a client base soon.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 2 dogs; Our girl Toffee is a 4 year old Heeler/Pit and our boy Sky is a Heeler/Catahoula. My mother and her 5 year old Golden also reside with us. I currently am a dog walker with Wag!. I just started, so I don't have many walks under my belt, but its fun and I enjoy meeting new doggie friends.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC by doing a search about raising chickens in my local area. We really hope to get started with chickens soon, so I figured this is a great community of people with a lot of information to share, so why not join!
