Hi, I recently joined BYC because I have a chick who is not being accepted by the hens and I am her new "mama hen". I was looking for any suggestions that people have about chicks! Thank you for you time and help!

Welcome to BYC!

For your chick depending on the age you'll want to add heat. 95 degrees the first week and five degrees less each week until it's about 5 weeks. Make sure your brooder is draft free. Is there any chance you could get it a buddy so it won't be lonely? Other than that some fresh chick feed and water and you should be set. Good luck with your chick :)

She stays on my chest under a heating blanket and a regular blanket recently, I am going to keep her inside tonight and try to dig out a heating lamp. She has become friends with my cat (I was nervous at first) and talks to me a lot but my dad is not to keen on the idea of bringing another one in the house. Thank you!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

If this is a tiny chick, you will need to brood this baby for 5 or 6 weeks under a heat lamp. Here is a good article on raising chicks for the first two months of life...

When this chick is 5 or 6 weeks old, you can not yet put it in with adult hens as they can kill it. So keep the chick in it's own enclosure in the run and it's own cage with roosting bar in the coop, in with the flock at all times. You can mix the chick in at 3 or 4 months of age. If they are too small, the older hens can hurt or even kill a small chick.

Good luck with this new baby and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good links and suggestions above, good luck with your chick.

Thank you for all the help! I went to my local feed store and picked up a friend for my chick, I am going to set up a little home for the night under a heat lamp and put out some chick starter that I picked up. I love these little guys!

This link was very helpful and so is everyone! Thank you so much!

She didn't make it and passed away in my arms, she was very much loved and thank you all for the advice again.

Welcome to BYC! I'm so sorry about the loss of your chick. Even when you only have one for a short time, it's still sad to lose one. Good luck with any more chicks you may get in the future.
