Although I grew up next door to my "chicken raising Gramma" I am just now (at 59 years old) going to start a flock of my own and I am happy! My custom built 7' x 7' coop with an attached, covered yard measuring 7' x 18' will be home to four pullets. While I've yet to settle on the breeds (I plan to get two each of two different breeds), it will be greatly influenced by what a local breeder has available mid to late-April when my setup is ready. I am considering Gingernut Rangers, RIR's and Golden or Black Stars. A different breeder also has Icelandics, which really appeal to me as well.
So...here I go! Feel free to comment, advise, suggest...thanks!

Icelandics (check out this thread on BYC) are meant to be kept pure - unless you don't sell hatching eggs.

! Great to have you in our flock! No time like the present to get yourself some chickens! Of the breeds you mentioned I have had RIRs and Black Stars - both have been great. Good luck in your choice and have fun with your birds!

Thanks for the input on Icelandics. Yes I am aware of breeding standards, which I won't be participating in. Mine will be kept for eggs and fun...no breeding here.

Hello and welcome from Ohio....so glad you joined BYC

Good luck with your decisions. I'm no good at it....which is why I have 30 :)
