Hi! My name is Katie, and I'm currently living in New York's Southern Tier. I joined a while back, but haven't gotten around to posting until now.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I was unexpectedly given my first batch of Buff Orpingtons about a year ago. The hobby grew on me, and I have since expanded from there.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I currently have 13 chickens in my main flock, along with two dozen pullets and cockerels that I hatched out this spring.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Buff Orpingtons, Isbars/Silverudds Blue, White Plymouth Rock, Black Copper and Wheaten Marans, Lavender Ameraucanas, and Gold Deathlayers.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They are entertaining to watch outside of my kitchen window. The fresh eggs and pest control for my property are nice perks, too.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy gardening and doing anything outdoors, especially SCUBA diving and hiking.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm an ecologist/wildlife biologist specializing in aquatic systems. I live with my husband, two little boys, my cat, and of course, my growing flock
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Whenever I've had to research any aspect of chicken keeping, BYC threads kept popping up, and they were usually filled with helpful information. I also wanted to connect with other poultry enthusiasts locally.
