Hi there... Long-time lurker, finally inspired to officially join and jump in on the conversation! My family (me, my husband, and our daughter and son) started our first backyard flock about 4 years ago, when we were living in the city of Buffalo. The ordinance allowed us five chickens (after jumping through flaming hoops and wading through miles of paperwork!), so we had a great run with three red and two black sex-link hens.
This past fall we moved to a rural area about 20 miles south of Buffalo, where we have 3.5 acres and a big barn just begging to be filled with delightful creatures. Our original flock of five came with us; unfortunately, they were lost to what we believe was a fox. We were sad to lose them, but learned from the experience and built a much more secure coop area. We now have a flock of 14 hens and one roo (our "free exotic" chick, a Golden Polish) that we got as day-old chicks in April. We have black and red sex links again, along with a Silver Spangled Hamburg, Black Australorps, a Blue Andalusian, Barred Rocks, Buff Minorcas and Auracanas/Americanas. It's such a treat to have a colorful flock this time, and the re-built chicken area has been great - no more free meals here.
We also recently acquired two alpacas. Next up: ducks (hoping to add a small flock before this summer is over) and turkeys (for next year). I've been reading a lot on here in the past few days about ducks, and look forward to learning more!
