Hello from western PA

Janie Doe's comment above is correct. There are periodic discussions here about whether you can come out ahead or be profitable with the prices of feed. Most people conclude that the best you can do, with lots of pasture feeding or free ranging (and no losses to predators) to supplement the grain feed, is to come out sort of even, but I doubt that's even possible now. But the chicken watching is worth a lot - they are engaging creatures! And knowing how your hens were treated, what they were fed can make those eggs taste even better.

Hello. My family and I have decided to get back into raising chickens this spring. About 10 years ago we had a flock, but one night a raccoon broke through the ventilation in our coop and killed them all. Between that and having a 2yo and a newborn, we decided to hold off on chickens until we were done having kids and they were old enough to help care for them. The current egg prices made this the year for it. We’ll be making some redesigns to our coop and building a new run (our chickens escaped all the time before, and it was a big pain). Happy to be back! 😊
Welcome back into to BYC!!
