Hello everyone!

After lurking and mining your forums for advice the past few years, I thought it was time for me to actually join! :p

I am a small backyard flock owner living in western Wisconsin. We bought our first home in 2021 and got a small flock of hens in 2022 as soon as we could get a coop up!

I was just planning on keeping a small layer flock of 5-6 hens until this spring, when I "went off the deep end" and let 2 broody hens hatch out some barnyard mix eggs for me. Now I have 9 crazy colored chicks to raise. Several came from speckled or dark olive eggs, so I'm hoping for exciting colors in the egg basket come fall/winter!

Since doing my first hatch this year I'm totally addicted and already looking at future hatching eggs ideas, with the hope of raising some crazy blue-green-olive speckled egg layers.

I would also love to get a few Russian Orloff chickens someday. I stumbled across the breed recently and I love their mottled feathers and muffs and I think they'd be a great fit for our wintry climate here!

When I'm not watching chicken TV, I'm an obsessive gardener and I also like to spin wool and knit my own clothing.

Welcome! Spinning wool and knitting your own clothes is impressive. Skills I absolutely don't have. But I am also an avid gardener and have been making sourdough bread, kombucha and canning some, so working on useful skills!
