Hi there.

My family and I are new to the chicken world. We've ordered our chicks and are expecting a May 6th delivery. We're very excited to start this new journey and can't believe we haven't done it before now! :) Our youngest son, who is 8, is really looking forward to collecting eggs in the near future.

I'm glad I ran across this forum. I'm sure I'll meet some great people as well as learn some fabulous information!

Good luck on your new project. It seems like a very long wait before the first egg is laid. It must seem even longer if you are only 8.

You might like to do some reading in our learning center here on BYC. Lots of good reads on all aspects of keeping poultry...

Good luck with your new babies, and welcome to BYC!

We explained to him that he'll just have to enjoy the chicks during that time. I'm told it can be between 18-24 weeks before we see eggs. Is that about right?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! 18-24 weeks is about average for most layer breeds, some of the fancy or heavy breeds will take longer.

My two Easter Eggers just took 27 weeks and then one of them lays a brown egg. :(
Thankfully my second bird does lay a lovely bluish green egg. :)

What type of chickens are you getting?

Odelia ~ We're starting with 6 - an Americana, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Leghorn, Rhode Island Red, and Wyandotte. :)
