I have been skulking around BYC for a couple of months now. I am Becki and I have had chickens since I bought 6 chicks in the Spring, 2013. They were 2 RIR, 2 Auracanas and 2 "gray" sex linked hens. I have one RI red left from that flock, her name is Beatrice. Our 5 yr. old papillon, Francesca fatally injured four of the other chicks on two separate occasions. #5 disappeared without as much as a feather of evidence left behind. So Beatrice is a special hen. My current avatar is a shot of her as a pullet.
I added 5 red sex linked hens to the coop so Beatrice could have peeps. Just this past month I decided to pursue a rooster adoption. :weee
I was successful. Still unsure of his breed, he is a good shepherd and not aggressive. Although my partner tells me the rooster is still young and subject to personality shift?? I think he's wrong and the rooster just has a nice temperament.
I also procured two EE hens. One is laying and the other a pullet. Pidge the pullet is like a child. She follows me everywhere, jumps on my shoulder when I open the coop, waits for me to hand feed/water her. I see a chicken diaper in my future. No, seriously!
Chickens bring a certain calm to my life. I need to be careful as I seem to want more as my coop grows in size and color.
I look forward to being a part of BYC.

Hope your chickens are safe from the Killer Pap. Please beef up security.

Greeting, members daily, I am surprised at how many small breeds Chihuahuas, doxies, yorkies and now Paps are massacring flocks. I always thought it would be shepherds, huskies, pits, and farm dogs.

I am a dog lover all my life but, with what I read on here, I wouldn't trust any of them near a chicken.

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry about your chicken losses. If you have a cockerel you are unsure of his breed, you can post his pic in our What Breed section for more help...

The personality of cockerels do change over time. So time will tell if he stays sweet.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!
