My wife and I are just getting started in chickens. A friend was moving out of state and donated her flock of 5 hens and all the equipment (4x8 dog run, coop, feeder and waterer with heater).

They haven't started laying again with the disruption from moving and we don't even know what kind they are. I'll see about posting a picture later.

This is what they woke up to this morning.

Greetings from Kansas and :welcome! Great to have you aboard. Same here! Woke up to a couple inches of powder and single digits....pretty cold for here and my hens really cut back on egg laying during cold snaps. As a chicken newbie you might want to spend some time perusing the Learning Center here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center
It's loaded with useful articles spanning the range of chicken keeping. And if you'd like to chat with local chicken folks you can locate the WY thread in the following link and say howdy: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you
Best wishes and thanks for joining BYC! :)

If you want some help identifying your girls when they have dug their way out, you could try posting some pictures on this Forum: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining. I've heard a rumour that they call that white stuff "snow", but like Teila I have no experience of it (well, not for the past 20 years).

I am sure that you will enjoy your chicken-keeping project.

All the best
CT

Yay, another member in WY! Come say hello on our state thread, Wyoming Unite.

I'm in Carbon county and our temps are wicked this morning...about -20* with a wind chill factor twice that. It looks like you have more snow than us though. Which is fine, lol.

Hope you're enjoying the chickens, it's nice to have you here!
