Hello! Glad to be part of the gang....

I am so new to chickens, that at the moment, this is the only one I have:

:D (I understand he's Turkish, so I call him Horoz - with those tail feathers, I assumed he's a roo'.)
I tripped up on BYC when researching chickens, as I plan to get some in the spring, and I have been hooked ever since.
I have purchased material to build a coop, and will get it, and an attached run, done over the next few months, and have room to let them free-range.
When I'm not at work (law firm accountant - sounds thrilling, huh? Ha!), or binge-reading this site, I like to garden, and to hang out with my Aussie, Junebug, and 2 cats, Beulah and Miss Kitty. I like to read (latest: The Emperor of All Maladies - A Biography of Cancer. Sounds heavy, but is actually an unusually captivating book, given the subject matter); I like to build things, be it a table or a house; I occasionally sew; and finally, and probably most fun, I like to ride my Indian Scout motorcycle.
I do most of this on 10 beautiful Texas Hill Country acres, which I look after while hubby is off working to pay the bills.
I am so excited at the prospect of getting chickens, and cannot express how very helpful and encouraging this site has been, although I must say that I sometimes wonder if the poor creatures are as prone to health issues as it sometimes seems from the posts here. Would any of you classify them as particularly delicate?
I am thinking friendly breeds for my first foray into this adventure: Faverolles, Fauvacana, Mille De Fleur, maybe a Silkie or two, Speckled Sussex, Jubilee Orpington - if I keep that up, I'll have far more than the 7-8 I intend to start with. I think y'all call that "chicken math"?
As you see, I am very chatty - I hope you'll forgive the loquaciousness. It's why I don't do well with Twitter - I can't even say "Hi" in only 140 characters! :D
Bless you if you made it this far - I look forward to making "chicken friends" here, and tapping into the expertise you all have accumulated over time.
Thanks for having me! KJ

Thank you! I have really enjoyed your thread about the balut eggs; last week, I didn't even know what balut was (thank God - that is so sad to me! Poor little critters). Very interesting, and inspiring.

:wootI'm sure you saw how I found out was balut was too.
You are more than welcome to come hang out there.

Yeah, that was wild! What a shock that must have been. I also enjoyed all the exchanges about "the Man".
We all still kill ourselves laughing about that.
The Man is the best part of the whole experiment.
:love I randomly read back pages here and there and still can't believe how funny everyone is.
