    A little about me:

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? We had chickens when I was growing up, And I loved them. Now that I'm grown and have a family of my own, I had been wanting to have them again, but my husband was reluctant. He finally caved, and we now have a small flock of hens. They are a huge hit, even with my husband. He couldn't resist them, especially when they started greeting him at his truck after work....lol

    (2) How many chickens do you have right now? We currently have 6 hens, but plan on adding a few more.

    (3) What breeds do you have? We have 3 black Australorps, and 3 Silver laced Wyandottes.

We've been handling them since they were baby chicks this spring, and they are very tame. Our Australorps even let us pick them up and pack them around. We let our little ladies free range during the day, and it's so fun to watch them follow the various family members around the yard. And we can't wait to start collecting eggs. I don't know who is more excited. Me or the kids?

I'm really looking forward to learning more about them from you more experienced folk.

    It's great to be here.

Welcome, I was born and raised in Aberdeen. There is a long on-going thread for Washington folks, join in!

My mother raised hens for her meat and egg route, would get 500 at a time and the chicks would be in the living room by the woodstove until they were moved to the henhouse, talk about noise.
All the egg collection and butchering and defeathering etc pretty much put me off the idea of chickens for myself, until a few years ago when I took care of my FIL's farm in Chehalis. He had 10 red sexlinks, and as they expired, he then got 10 black sexlinks. I just loved working with them on that small scale, and when he passed away I brought them and the coop home with me. (Kalama) Just 3 of those girls are left now, and this spring I bought 7 babies, hoping they are all hens.

    Welcome!
