Hello I have used this site many times as reference for a lot like building my coop. Thank you John Hartman great plans and ideas. I am the proud owner of: 1 male mammoth turkey 3yr, 1 hen mammoth turkey 2yr, 1 Hen speckled Sussex 1yr, 2 Rooster? speckled Sussex 2month, 2 Blue face hatch hens ?yr, 1 Rooster very curious of the breed? All my birds bed down in a coop that is an exact replica of the john Hartman medium coop. The Tom and my rooster lay in hay as well as my chickens and they take up so much room even tough i have put up the perfect roost for them. All my hens to include the turkey have layed eggs in the exact same spot over a period of seven days i now have a pile of 15 eggs and no one is sitting on them. So i guess my question is
1. What should I do about the eggs? I want to hatch them out but I am worried no one will sit on them. Should I move them and sort them so there are more than one pile?
2. Is there a reason why my rooster and tom turkey wont roost? I have read a lot on this and have applied all the knowledge I could find to make the perfect roost.
3. Is there any issue with my hen turkey in the hen house? She wont scare the other hens out of laying will she? They all seem to bed down together and even my peeps lay on top of the hen at night(They will roost on her back all night and ride her around sometimes in the day its hilarious.)

Well I thank you in advance for the advice. If you need more info I will provide as much as I know. I know a little about chickens enough to get me in trouble.

Welcome to BYC!

Turkeys and chickens need to be kept in separate quarters. There are not only diseases that Turkeys and Chickens can pass to each other, but they each have different feed requirements. Your Turkeys need somewhere along the lines of 26% protein, and your chickens need about 16%.

As for the eggs, you can't make them go broody and won't set until they are. So you may need an incubator.

If you have specific questions about your Turkeys, you can post questions in our Turkey section for more help with them...

Enjoy your wonderful flock and welcome to ours!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some good advice and link for the turkey/chicken question. You might want to check out the Learning Center, lots of good articles you'll find helpful. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center In the Hatching Chicks section there are a couple of articles on Broody Hens, hens (chicken or turkey) won't set on eggs unless they are broody. You probably want to collect they eggs, you can leave a couple of fake eggs in the nest so they'll keep laying there, and either incubate them yourself, or collect them until you have a broody... you can collect eggs for about ten days and still have a decent hatch (see Hatching 101 article for info on storing hatching eggs etc).
Is your roost easy to get onto and off of? Yyou could post pictures of your roost/coop in the Coop/Run Design forum, maybe somebody will see something to suggest www.backyardchickens.com/f/9/coop-amp-run-design-construction-amp-maintenance

turkey's are really stupid when it comes to being broody. they will sit forever if the eggs are bad and it is extremely hard to break them of their broodiness. chicken eggs under a turkey always seemed to break but duck eggs always did the trick. a hen chicken would be your best bet to incubating turkey eggs. they are alot lighter and alot better mothers. my suggestion, don't let your turkey's brood. i never had the problem with turkeys and chickens roosting together cause the turkeys always seemed to like to roost in trees.

Welcome to the site. Others will have to help you with your turkey and egg hatching questions though as I've no experience there.

Sorry for the delay. I have built an incubator so we will see how that goes.

I also have a friend that has a real broody hen of her own and is allowing me to bring over my turkey eggs for hatching.
Thank you all for the replies. I have seen a lot of people who say there turkeys are happy without a coop and I have a fenced acre so why not Ill see if they like it.
