Songster
So far my starter flock of laying hens to be is a grand total of 9 fine feathered friends who have distinct personalities already even though there are two of them I still have trouble telling them apart still. I have three different breeds among the nine. I opted for Swedish Flower Hens, Buff Orpingtons, and Creme Legbars so that I would have very friendly hens and very heat tolerant foragers for the most part since I live in the Deep South. The Orpingtons will be my heaviest birds but I just couldn’t pass up on their personalities for us as beginners and our family having shy children and one special needs son who I plan to have heavily involved with the hens to allow him to enjoy their sweet song and comforting nature and teach him some tasks and responsibility in a pressure free environment. He will be getting a new support dog also this year who I will also be training to also protect Him and the flock when they are foraging some free range possibly and I will be teaching him to train and work also with his dog as we work with the hens coincidentally. Well I know that is enough about me. I will have many questions I am sure. So far things are going wonderfully with our chicks. We were taken care of great by Meyer Hatchery out of Ohio no thanks to the Postal Service worker here locally who was swinging their carrier around like it was a box full of jello mold but we won’t go there. Thank God He didn’t have his hands on them over night or anything. So they made it to us in fine shape and no worse for wear. They were ready to eat and drink well right off the bat which was great and so far I don’t think I have seen any signs of pasty butt. I was a bit concerned today at one point about my one chick but that was not what I was seeing so it was all good. All is well and I hope to enjoy chatting and learning from all of you soon in the future. Thanks in advance.
