Hello! I’m moving to a new home that comes with chickens.

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. I have to agree with the "sweet" comment! When I moved here from CO, the buyer of my old place was much like you and wanted my chickens to stay. Worked out easier for me so it was a win-win. Chickens are called the gateway animal for farmers because they really are pretty easy to deal with. There's a learning curve of course, and there will be losses, but I hope you find it as great a hobby as we do.

There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember from this thread. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

OMG! Where did you find a place like that! You are a lucky, lucky person.

I see people have already directed you to good information but I'm here to tell you that it's really very little actual "work" and a whole lot of very satisfying results and even fun.

I've only been at this myself since October or November. I entered into it with excited anticipation but also a fair amount of intimidation. ALL most unnecessary, it turns out.

I do their "maid service" in the morning scraping the poop board and while I'm in there I collect any eggs. If I can't get to the poop scoop occasionally, they don't mind. I fill their feed bucket and water bucket every week or so (but check on it more frequently!!). And I bring them fresh greens and kitchen scraps most days.

Other than that, I sit with them and talk back to them and watch them being silly. LOVE it even more than the exceptional eggs!!!

I knew the sellers were downsizing so I asked if they were leaving the chicken coop behind. They answered yes so then I asked if they’d like me to takeover the chickens and they agreed. They’ve been super nice and helpful and have agreed to come by and take care of the chickens while we are in the moving process since we will be in and out of town for a couple of weeks. I think It’s a win for all of us including the chickens.

That makes complete sense. I suppose there's a day coming for all of us when we're going to have to let our chickens go. What a blessing to have someone like you to take them, where you know they're going to be taken care of.

You are very Lucky to get chickens and a coop when you move into the new place!

G’Day from down under Tntcougar75 :frow Welcome and Congratulations on your new home! :clap

We relocated 1,800kms recently and put our chickens on the plane with the cats; separate crates of course :p

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
