hello i am new

I just finished my four bird coop and it only cost $20. I bought all of my plywood on craigslist, and the rest I got by taking apart other projects (think bunk bed, it's already the perfect size and shape for your frame) or letting my friends know what kind of materials I needed. You'd be amazed how many people have a few pieces of lumber sitting in the shed taking up space.

i think there is a place near where i live where they have free pallets. i don't know how good they are, but i think i might take a look today. I am also going to walk to another person's house who i think has chickens also.

We used an extra large doghouse - Saint Bernard, I believe - that we got for free from Craigslist. That worked for our whole first year with four, and then seven and then nine chickens. At which point we knew a lot more about them than when we started, though still never enough!

At that point we built a coop we still love.

Our climate's cold, and yours may be cooler still - but the chickens were just fine that first year. They had the doghouse, lots of bedding, their lightbulb, fresh water and food, and nary an illness or complaint.

Might be worth holding off on building til later, when you know more about what you like?

hi there ...and welcome...

i am in Ontario too!...just a little east of you...I am in Guelph....

Craigslist is not really a big thing here but freecycle is great!!!!

a chicken tractor may be a good idea for you...its inexpensive to make and it can be moved around and into a sheltered area in the winter so its out of the direct line of the snow...

my biggest problem this winter has been keeping the water from freezing...i wish i would have not spend so much on making their coop as big as i did...and spent more money on a heated water dish...
