Hi!
i have just been given chicks as a present from a Aunt who really doesn't think things out as i know NOTHING about looking after them...
the temperature over here is about 40 degrees celcius outside and inside is about 30 degrees.. is this warm enough for the chicks or do i still need a source of heat??

also what do i feed them and what is nad for them?? my Aunt said they were leghorns and all i know is that they are good layers.. i have 10 chicks in total. i have bought them chick feed (non medicated) and am just filling up the bowl whenever it gets dirty.
also is there any way to keep them cool when it is VERY hot?? thanks!!

30*C should be warm enough for them, though you may need to supplement the heat a bit at night, when it cools down. Watch their behaviour: when they are spread out and looking comfy they are o.k. When they pile on top of each other and huddle together they are too cold. Food wise stick with chick food for the first 2 weeks. After that you can start giving them treats such as cooked rice, fresh greens, mealworms etc. It's important to give them grit once you start feeding treats and don't give too much treats. (If you can't find chick grit clean, coarse sand will do). There is a thread on chick treats here: Raising Baby Chicks - Notable Topic Index - Please Review There are also some great articles on raising chicks etc in the Learning Center. Enjoy!

Good advice from Sumi. Welcome to BYC.

Thanks Sumi!!! They are doing great so far!! they are loving the temperature and are eating fine! i have JUST come back from buying all of their stuff they need!!
are these ok??
- a chick drinker
- a shallow porcelain rabbit bowl for the feed (i literally couldnt find anything else)
- LOADS more chick feed
- a 250 watt heat bulb just in case

Sounds good! I feed my chicks in those shallow plastic bowls/trays you put under your potted plants to catch water. They are cheap, easy to find and wide enough that the chicks can't tip them over and spill their food.

thats great!!
but my aunt JUST told me today that they AREN'T leghorns!!! They are Golden Appanzellers!! do i have to change anything i am doing?? i have resaerched about golden appanzellers and they don't lay as well and they are show breeds. anything else i need to know? sorry for the inconvenience. btw they are in my avatar!! :)

Lucky you! Those are lovely chickens. Chicks' basic needs are the same, so carry on as you were. Make sure they have food and water and warmth when needed. And a clean brooder, of course!
