Hello! i have a hen her name is buddy ive made one post about her before and i got some help from it but now i was outside feeding the hens and giving them water. when i noticed that buddy butt was frozen from wet poop i gave her a bath. And noticed that her butt and her belly about to the middle of her wing was kinda larger and the feathers look like there breaking out i guess i could say also she was puking so i thought she had a sour cop but i read more today and seems that she has the soft stop with liquid but also is only drinking water barely eats any food. She sleep 90 percent of the time and she sits up straight like a penguin. She stays away from the other hens even if that means she stands in the snow i haven't seen her poop in a while but that just could be that she was pooping outside. she eats a little bit but only if i hold it up to her. i dont know what i should feed her because shes not very interested in the chicken food.

I am sorry your hen is so sick.

It would be better for her if you brought her inside your house in a wire cage as she will not be able to keep herself warm in the situation you described.

She seems to suffer from crop impaction and therefore has runny poop that gets frozen to her plumage.

Here are some helpful and informative links on how to treat the issue:

but how do i know if its an impacted crop and do i have to do open her up? im a young person. me and my parents have no idea how to do any of that stuff i was shown in the articles. weve only had chickens for about 3 years maybe. and ive done one surgery on a prolapse bottom on a chicken and sadly she didnt make it im to scared to do any type of surgery in fear of hurting her. also i haven't seen her poop in a while. i can go on my phone and upload a few photos if that could help me figure out whats wrong with her.

how do i know if its an impacted crop

If you put her in a crate without bedding, food or water overnight, her crop should be flat and empty in the morning. If it is not empty or still inflated, you will know that she has a crop issue that needs treatment.
do i have to do open her up?

No, in your case it would be important to identify the problem and then go from there step by step. We are all here to help you along the way the best we can from afar.

Yes, I can understand that this would be frightening and not for you to take on.

Maybe a vet is an option and if need be the vet could perform the surgery.

Yes, that would be helpful.

If she has a messy butt, please give her a bath with warm water and some epsom salt. Clean her well and after some 5-10 minutes dry her well with a towel and then finish with a hair dryer until she is all dry and fluffy again. Be careful not to burn her as the air can get quite hot on chicken skin.

The swollen abdomen could hint to some reproductive problems that often lead to crop impaction.

Puking can happen when the crop is filled with fluids or feed and does not empty into the digestive system due to some kind of blockage. The blockage might be found in the crop itself or further down the digestive system or be caused by tumors or internal laying.

How old is she and when did she lay last an egg?
