Hello - I'm a newbie to the chicken world

:thumbsup
I have no idea what breeds to start with. I have to first find out if it's legal where I live. Then I'll take it from there.

Check with your local planning commission in your town and see if they have laws and ordinances, an application, or permit required regarding chickens. They will let you know what you need. I wouldn’t buy or build anything till you know. It will dictate type of structure, placement on property, type of chickens, number, etc. Good Luck!

As for breeds, shop around everyone has their picks or favorites which may be different. That’s ok!
See Hatchery List!

Think of your weather conditions in your area, if need cold hardy, heat tolerant, does it matter if standard or rare breeds, or like bantams. You can read up on breeds on Hatchery sites or here at BYC forums. Think if you want large, medium, or small eggs. Does color matter brown, white, blues, or greens etc? This helps to determine breed.
My Pet Chicken has a free tool on website for breed recommendations based on your preferences and weather conditions. You can play around with that and see what it would recommend for you. https://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/which-breed-is-right-for-me.aspx
They will tell you the best layers etc.

There may also be local breeders or stores in your area. Look first for awhile before deciding. I like best layers because I am limited to six with no Roos so need them to lay. I have Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock, and Golden Buffs. All large brown layers who are friendly and will tolerate heat and cold for example. Good Luck on your search and journey! Have fun! :)

I just sent an email to my local commissioner. We'll see what he says! Fingers crossed.
