I have six horses, live on 52 acres, and have ALWAYS wanted chickens... especially since I've seen pictures of Buff Orpingtons!!! They are wonderful...so fluffy. They look really cuddly—which I am sure they're not!

I've looked at the coops, the small ones, and I'm going to have my handyman build me one! So, thank you very much for that MSbear! Hopefully it will get me started!

I've also read about preditors ... which means I guess I can't let the "clucker-oos" out while I'm a work.

Some Buff Orpingtons are cuddly, atleast my 3 are anyway.
Give them a try. Worst that can happen is fluffy butts strutting around the yard and running to you to sit on your lap or shoulder or asking for treats.

My Buff Orpington is the friendliest of all my breeds! As far as preditors, my advice is to do everything possible to keep your hens safe. I hate reading in this forum that raccoons and foxes have wiped out a whole flock! We owe it to our hens to house them safely.

Yes, I would hate to come home and find "bodies" .... but it's ok to let them out if I'm going to be close by,....right? From what I've read on this forum so far, that *seems* to be the way to go.

When do you let yours out?
 
OH NO! I just discovered chickens have HOCKS!!!

For those of you that are also horse people (BTW, do you call yourselves "chicken people"?) does this mean we have to worry about hock injections? (kidding.)
