Hi, I'm Tami and I'm a first grade teacher. I used to hatch chicks in my classroom and new a great lady who had "show" chickens. She'd bring me eggs to hatch, and then come back to pick up the chicks and show the kids some adult chickens. She was wiped out about 8 years ago with an avian illness and economy. So...I haven't hatched chicks in a long while.

I'm back at it! I have three mystery bantams, and I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I think it's two cockerels and one hen. So, I'm wondering if she'll be lonely and I'll have to get more (I can't keep roosters!). I want 2-3 so it'll be easy to maintain.

I'm married and have two young boys and a dog (curly-coated retriever) who thinks the cage in our living room is her personal - and very fascinating -T.V. We don't leave them alone!!!

She's very well-trained (Therapy and Agility dog) but, she is a bird dog!!

My students are having a FANTASTIC experience, and have LOVED watching the whole process unfold. It's amazing how much they will write about these little critters! And, of course, every kid in my neighborhood (and most parents) have to come visit the babies regularly. They are now 3 weeks old and in that awkward "teenager" stage - but still so funny!

Here's the pics of my mystery chicks - don't know the breed or the sex, so we haven't named them yet! They are One, Two and Three until we know!!! :) Shown respectively - 1,2,3 - then 1 again cause he's so silly - he...hopefully a she...

Hi Tami, welcome to BYC!

Nice intro and good photos of your chicks! That's great that your students got to watch chicks hatch, kids and chicks just seem to go together.

I'm not an expert on breed/gender but either someone will come along here and tell you or you can post your photos and descriptions on this forum to find out more:

If you do have to get rid of a couple of roosters, get 2-3 more chicks so your lone girl won't be lonely. Chickens are flock animals and prefer to be in a group. One of our members,
@MountainPeeps has just published an article on integrating new chicks and you might find it helpful:

Good luck to you, nice to have you join us!

so glad you joined us.

@NorthFLChick has already given you great advice.

My guess would be a roo with that much comb showing at 3 weeks- but I thought 2 - 3 of my BO's were boys until they started laying :)

Do post the pics under what breed, gender forum for more opines, it would be nice to know what breed they are as well.

Many people have been successful with only a couple of pullets, but they really are happier with at least 3 and better 4 as a minimum flock number.

Good luck with all, will keep my fingers crossed that #1 is a girl. Have fun and enjoy the little ones, but make plans on rehoming just in case.

I've got two babies (mail order) that look like yours. They're Black Copper Marans. Color and feathered feet all the same. Could be what yours are...? Looks like you have two cockrells and one pullet possibly. :)

Hope I am wrong but I think no. 1 is a boy. It usually seems that the standouts are cockerels. But it's not written in stone. Glad you joined us at Backyard chickens.

Mine are "supposed" to be sexed and all female but I'm not counting on it! May post some pics and get some opinions when I get a sec
