Hi! Welcome to BYC!Hello BYC Community! My name is Jackie and I’m from PA. I’m a stay at home mom to 2 children. An 8 year old boy and 3 year old girl. I have come across BYC many times when I’m “googling” chicken questions and I figured it was probably just time to join the community considering I have a flock and always plan to have a flock. I’m hoping to take away many helpful tips and tricks for my ladies to make sure they get everything they need and deserve! I have had my girls (and guy) for 2 years come next month (March 2017). I currently have 5 chickens. I did have 7 but last week while my chickens were free ranging I lost 2. Needless to say I was devastated. They had only been out for a little over an hour before I noticed a strange dog down in the wooded area of my home. When I took off running to get the dog I then noticed 2 of my girls missing; I saw some wing feathers of the one, but nothing of the other. I don’t know if the dog was reasonable or something else. The dog was very friendly and actually turned out to be a farm dog that came from a farm with 70 chickens so the owner said. I’m still very upset about this whole incident. The unknowing drives me insane exp when I check on them constantly when they are out. I’ve felt like a chicken mom failure. They aren’t “just chickens” to me; they are my little crew that I have taken care of everyday since they were 2 days old. They know who I am and always run up to me when I’m outside and follow me around like puppies. But in the end, I know this tends to happen during free range. Anyway, my now current flock consists of 2 silkie girls, and a silkie rooster who is a handful. I also have a Plymouth Rock and Wyandotte Golden. The ones I lost were my Wyandotte Silver and my Austrlop. We have the Hens for egg laying and my silkies just because I wanted them and they are my cuddle ladies. They allow my children to hold them and carry them around. My silkie rooster was a surprise in the mix. I knew there was a chance I would get one considering they didn’t come sexed. Anyway, I will end my LONG intro here. I’m happy and excited to finally be a part of the community and look forward to everything that comes along with it.![]()
Hi! Welcome to BYC!
So sorry for the loss of your two birds. I lost one of my hens to a rooster who broke her neck. It always is a sad time when they go. ;(
As a glimmer of hope,
If you didn’t find feather traces of both of them,
I had a hen who ran away and we thought she was killed until.....
We found her sitting on a nest she made with 17 eggs! And all 17 hatched. Hopefully you may find your bird wandering around the yard with a million chicks too!
Hope you enjoy BYC!
Hahaha, he can be down right aweful sometimes. He loves to show me he's the boss but I clearly show him otherwise and show no fear towards him. I'm pretty sure he doesn't like that. lolI know the feeling of having a silkie rooster handful lol. I had a silkie rooster who was a handful too. Welcome to BYC
My silkie roosters name was storm, he died middle of last year. He used to chase us and I was terrified of him. Mum and dad just kept walking but I would run out the yard screaming. We have two really really good roosters in now that are just awesome with people. You can pick them both up and they will actually be nice. I have a silkie/bantam flock where if I acquire any blind-in-one-eye or permantanly injured chickens or even really really young they all go in there and hang with them, I have a silkie rooster in there at the moment called Albert Cluckstein. My other flock are all the bossy, standard sized chickens (although there are two bantams in there one is the boss) our rooster in there is Bentley he is a BCM x and he is just lovely.Hahaha, he can be down right aweful sometimes. He loves to show me he's the boss but I clearly show him otherwise and show no fear towards him. I'm pretty sure he doesn't like that. lol
I have a Rhode Island Red rooster who used to be a trouble maker. Thankfully we tought him a lesson. It sounds cruel however, whacking him with objects worked! And he is the sweetest rooster I’ve ever seen!Hahaha, he can be down right aweful sometimes. He loves to show me he's the boss but I clearly show him otherwise and show no fear towards him. I'm pretty sure he doesn't like that. lol
