I'm new to raising chickens this spring. I started with 19 and my beagle got them:somad Then I got more, it started as 12, then the color scheme wasnt working so I added 6 more red, then I was convinced I was going to have alot of roo's so now 40 chickens later here I am....I also took 2 hens and a rooster that are 1 y/o old from a friend and guess what? Thursday I just hatched my first chick. Very addicting!!!

I started out with six the first week of March, and I was very proud of myself for stopping there until the pullets were almost ready to lay. Then, with all the cute pictures of chicks of different breeds on here, I just got 33 from Meyer Hatchery last week! Two died, but that still leaves me 31 babies and six pullets = 37 chickens! I live alone, and really love eggs, but 37 chickens!

I did intentionally get some roos this time so next spring I can let a broody hatch and raise all the chicks. Then the chicken math will be the fault of broodies and roos, not mine! You can't control Mother Nature!

Thanks everyone!

I can't wait to get started! Ha ha! We're going away for the weekend at the end of the month, so I'll probably start like beginning of September. I don't have to leave them alone all weekend, especially if I get chicks!

from Arkansas! So you are wondering a bit about chicken breeds. Well, I would recommend Orpingtons and Plymoth Rocks. Both come in all kinds of colors, are hardy, good layers, and are pretty friendly! By the way, start out with a BIG coop and pen, like others say, chickens are addicting! I started out with 2 chickens, 2 guinis, 2 turkeys, and 2 pheasants. Needless to say, we now have 15 chickens!
