Hi..
I'm new, but I finally signed up after lurking for a few months lol
In a few weeks I will be getting my first flock and after a lot of research I've decided on SLW's as I like the look and I wanted a heritage breed to carry on the breed into the future.
I have my coop designed with everything I feel necessary and nothing over the top (yet lol).
I've been told I should begin with a hybrid but, I don't know of anypne around here who sells chicks for a non-ridiculous price and I don't have the inclination to incubate any eggs just yet.
Is there anything special I should know about these chickens that I wouldn't be able to find any place but here.?

thanx,
Jodi

I love the idea of getting a heritage breed. I myself have 2 heritage breeds (Orpington and a SLW) and I love them! SLW's aren't the friendliest breed in my experience, but I have heard that they are great layers (though mine hasn't started laying yet). I do have a mutt EE, and she seems to have a friendlier temperament than the purebred heritage chicks. Really, you should get whatever your heart decides, but to lean you more toward the SLW, here is a pic of mine :)

I absolutely love my SLW -she is the sweetest thing in the world. I also have a buff orphington, Easter Egger, and Dominique. (I'm new to chickens too). I've heard that the Silver Laced Wyandotes aren't the friendliest, but mine sure is! So far, they are all super easy to care for. Good luck!

Thank you for your input, it's truly appreciated. I do love the SLW'S and almost any of the laced chickens, but, these are the ones that grabbed my heart. I also believe that you should really get what you love as it does make a huge difference in ones desire to keep and care for anything a person may get.
My passion is to be a conservator of heritage breeds and I want to be able to produce meat and eggs for my family with eggs to sell on the side. One day I hope to be able to offer fertile eggs from show quality Wyandottes and started chicks, too.
At some point I want to add Bantam size birds because I just love the little chickens. I am going to eventually get some Flower Hens and some Bresse, but, I'm not actually sure what else. I do want to set up a small Quail aviary since my husband seems to like the game birds the best.
I'm happy to be a part of this group and welcome any comments, good or bad, regarding my posts.

Thanx,
Jodi

She's lovely. It always makes me laugh when I look at the pictures of the SLW's at different ages.

LOL The poor things remind me of the Ugly Duckling story because they go through such sad and pitiful looking stages before they become the beautiful birds we see in the other photos.
Good luck with your ladies. Caring for another life can be rewarding on so many levels.

Best of Luck,

I really love the idea of a mixed flock and down the road I hope to add to the flock I am starting. I'm currently obsessed with the SLW's, but I really like most of them, Bantam and Standard.
I'm hoping that the gentle, consistent and every day handling of my chicks will help them trust me and be a bit more on the friendlier side, but, if not, that's okay too. We will just have to see how they turn out. If they aren't then I will probably get some Silkies to feed my desire for pets in the flock.
