Oh my...the prices range from several hundred---well into the thousands.
My first trail horse was $300..,,,That was wayyy back in 1980 ...she was 3 ,we bought her from a neighbor--and she was an arab mix...no purebred..
Price depends if you want purebred, grade(mixed or unknown)---trained, greenbroke( has been introduced to a rider on his/her back, but...needs work)
...for a good trail horse...around here is $1200- 1500 or so. Of course, the more training and experience they have--the more the seller usually asks.
I never showed or competed, just had pets and trail rode with friends...
You'd want one advertised for a beginner...or kid safe, bombproof.. Mares can be moody--.not all, but many--..I have always had mares to ride.
Geldings would be the way I'd go now..if I got another just for trail riding....
Many are sold on craigslist , through local classifieds, word of mouth....local farm store bulletin boards...
Of course, horses are social and herd animals, so--they do like to have a 'friend'--
does not have to be another horse though....
