Winter is coming

I use solar just to operate my chicken door which has did a good job keeping enough charge to the battery to keep it operating when we get those non sunny stretches. I take water out a couple times a day and put a heavy clear plastic on the run which really warms up in the day(greenhouse like) and keeps the cold wind out.
I’m doing similar here in New Hampshire. I’m a newbie but daughter has raised flocks in the past and helped me get started. Having issues with the solar powered door now that the days have shortened. I do have power backup so will be able to use a water heater.

I found out I needed to go to a large battery (rv battery) to keep enough charge to get through those dark sunless stretches. My door is homemade but has worked great when the battery has a charge.
