PS the heat... I was charmed by the idea of the Texas chicken air conditioner. Take a plastic water (or jug if you have room) and fill it to a half inch to top with water. Freeze it over night. Put several bottles or jugs in your pen, in the shade if possible, and the chickens will just sit nearby and enjoy the cool from the frozen bottles.
