I live up a mountain in Catalonia, Spain.
I currently care for three tribes of chickens as part of my work on what I suppose one would describe as a smallholding.
I became interested in chickens because of a Maran cock named Major. He used to supervise my fencing work and the more I watched him, the more I wanted to know why he did what he did.
I read everything I could find on chicken behavior; studies mainly from the 1940's onward which I was fortunate enough to have access to, lots of books, and of course, the internet.
The chickens here are free range; by that I mean they are let out of their houses in the morning and assuming they all come home, locked in their houses at night. The predation rate is very high, we have hawks, weasels, feral mink, buzzards, wild cats, dogs and of course, humans.
During the day they range over approximately four acres, each tribe having a defined territory.
I've been studying these chickens for seven years now and I am currently writing a book on chicken behavior.
