hello BYC!

I have been reading info on here since getting my chicks back in April and finally decided to join.

I am a mother to 2 little girls, a teacher and a wife. We started a little hobby farm this year with 3 Nigerian dwarf goats and 10 chicks. We purchased a rainbow flock from Meyer hatchery in Polk so they are all different breeds. RIR, NHR, white legbar, barred rock, gold laced Wyandotte, buff Orpington, Lake Erie Egger
Black astralorpe and a partridge pendesenca.

I have built all my chicken areas as they have outgrown them. I retrofitted the back half of a 12x12 building that was on our property when we moved in 2 years ago. It’s been a lot of fun so far and i have found my oldest daughter, 4, is a chicken whisperer. She can catch, hold and carry around any of the chickens she wants without any complaints from them.

My only problem is waiting for egg production to start!! They are about 10 weeks old now. Maybe a little older as i tend to loose a week here or there doing projects! ;-) I have considered many times adding some juvenile pullets to our flock just so i don’t have to wait.

Here is some pics of our coops and critters.

Hello!!!! Welcome to BYC. I am also from Ohio. Go Bucks!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

You've got aways to go yet if they are only 10 weeks old! :p Just hang tight, they should be laying by 20 or 24 weeks of age. I wouldn't add birds to your flock just yet. Integrating birds can be work, you can't just throw them together, there is a "get to know each other period from behind wire or a cage for a few weeks" issue to prevent injury and such as they will fight and argue. I know it's hard to wait, but it WILL be worth the wait!!!

Enjoy and welcome to our roost! :)

ThAnks for the input. That’s definitely what has stopped me thus far from adding a laying hen. I did the math and they are 11 weeks so u fortunately we do have a ways to go.

It’s ironic that i keep running out of eggs with chickens in my back yard...

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!:frow Glad you joined the flock! BYC is a very helpful and informative about poultry! They are still quite young to be producing any eggs. Light and duration or (photo period) puts pullets into maturity sooner and will produce eggs a lot earlier, so the more hours of daylight, the sooner maturity. The negative point of view of chickens coming into maturity way too soon and gain more weight at an earlier age will result to fewer and smaller eggs and can be prone to egg laying problems such as, prolapse of the uterus. Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!
