Hi Everyone I'd like to say hi. I have been lurking around this site for weeks and learning so much. I'm new to chickens.

Two weeks ago I bought birds from a vet friend of mine that shows and breeds. The birds include 1 Rooster (speckled sussex) and five hens: 1 cuckoo maron, 1 rhode island red, 1 silver laced wyandotte, 1 barrred rock and one mixed breed. All birds are this years with the exception of the roo and the maron which are both one years old.

The birds are laying except for the maron. I think that she is either coming out of a molt or going into one. Her feathers seem a little loose but she is not losing too many. I picked her up and looked at her bottom yesterday and that seems fine too. She is running around and otherwise seems healthy. Any ideas why she is not laying?

I was also wondering I feed them outside. Should I also supply feeders in the coop at night? I will once winter gets here and they stay inside. But for now they just come and go as they please. I just need to know if they eat at night or just sleep all night.

Thanks!

Marans take longer to lay than the other breeds you mentioned. If they all hatched at the same time, it may just take a few more weeks for her to start to produce.

The good thing is they normally lay nice sized eggs from the beginning,or at least mine do. No little bitty pullet eggs. Enjoy your girls.

Well the Maron is one year old or older. The other hens are born this year and laying little bitty eggs. But I don't mind!

Hi there! When she does lay, it will be a nice pretty egg!
My Cuckoo Marans hen lays the prettiest egg of all the birds I have! It sounds like you have a nice mix! Enjoy! Tina
