In the Brooder

Hi Everyone,

I have a mother hen with 10 baby chicks (I don't know the kind but she is black with white specks) and 3 of her babies are yellow. She is not taking care of the 3 yellow ones. Does anyone know why this would be? She is new to mothering, this is her first time. She is about a year old. All of the other babies are with her but I kept finding the 3 yellow ones huddled together off to the side not with the others. I have taken them inside as it is about 60 degrees outside. They are under a heat lamp now but I'm concerned about re-introducing them later on. Why is this happening? Is it just a coincidence that they are the 3 yellow ones and all the others are either black or brow? Also- she was laying on 13 eggs and after the first 3 hatched over the course of 3 days I finally took the remaining eggs to an incubator so she would get off her nest and show the babies how to eat and drink, which she did. As the others hatched and dried off I would take them out to her. She at first took in the yellow ones just fine, they stayed over night with her and survived but today I kept finding them off on their own all huddled up together. What is going on??

Hmmm, well that is what I suspected. I am new to this so I'm over here living and learning! Now what to do? Do I just raise the 3 yellow ones inside until they can be outside? And then what? Will they mix with the flock after time?

Thank you so much for answering my question, Tonya (I think) I SO appreciate the help:hugs
I'm also trying to figure out how to use this platform! Thank you also for all the welcomes!

And yes, I've got the brooder all set up and babies (3 yellow ones) are in there now all warm and toasty, eating and drinking and sleeping.

The reason they were staggered is a little complicated but I'll try to explain. She was sitting on a nest in a wooden box that had a wooden "bar-ish" thing across the front at the bottom. Well, there was a space between that bar and the actual bottom of the box and after time her nest began falling out of that space (the straw) until one day there was hardly any straw/nest left and she was just sitting on the wood of the box. UGH!! Poor thing! So I moved her and her eggs by turning the box on its side where now there was a lip so her straw would not slide off and it would keep her nest together... does this make any sense?
Anyways, some of the eggs were not under her all the way because of the loss of straw and I really figured I had really messed up and that most of her eggs would not hatch but then, most of her eggs DID HATCH! I was very surprised for sure. I hope this explains my situation.
