Hello :) Kinda new to all this.

I have 7 boxes fo4 30 hens and they only use a few of them. I free range so chickens find places they prefer. I have a beer fridge in the shop, that is beer free and has been over the winter, so I propped the door open so it would not get moldy and mildew. I have 4 hens that have decided to lay on the middle shelf of the fridge. It started with one, now up to four.

I may forget nest boxes and just go with old fridges.

@duluthralphie , your fridge reminds me of a picture I saw one time where old clothes dryers were being used for nesting boxes.

@drumstick diva , just described how my girls act (have you been spying on us?)...we have 4 boxes for 12 birds. 1 or 2 boxes are the "best" for the day and they plop right in next to the current box resident. Or crab at whoever is taking too long in the favorite boxes.

Chickens are funny little critters!

Wow - loving all the info :) So helpful for someone just starting out - so I thank you. So I am getting the message. Don't lose sleep over nesting boxes. Check.

I think my husband would be more than a little miffed if the chickens take over his beer fridge. Hahaha - might work out well for me though!!

The funny thing about the beer fridge is, the last time I used it was to give my processed chickens a place to rest after "camp day". I have plastic garbage bags on the shelves from the resting bird and now they are using it nesting material. I even asked one the other day if she was sure she wanted to hurry and get in the fridge. She did.

Here is a newbie question. I wasn't raised around "free range chickens" -- how do you get them back in the coop?

You talk nice to them.......

Actually they will go in on their own at dusk. They do not want to be outside after dark. When training them to lay in the coop and not where ever they want, I keep them in until nearly noon allowing them the run only. Which is something I should do again soon. Refridge eggs are getting old!
