Ive been raising chickens off and on my whole life. Most of which has been done is shasta county, which is a fairly ag county. Recently i moved to Sacramento and found out that we are only allowed to have 3 female chickens and only within 10,000 sq feet, plus they have to be strictly penned in. I find this to be a bit...well...stupid. (In shasta county we are allowed to have 12 female poultry of any type per 1/2 acre and are allowed to run in the yard as log as they have coops; and as long as they stay in the owners yard). I get that the city has to have standards, but these just seem to be odd, especially for people like me who use our chickens as bug eaters, we let them out in our garden and they kill all the pests while leaving lady-bugs and bees alone. ive run into people in the city that dont pay attention to the rules and have 5-15 male and female chickens in less then 10 feet of space, JUST AWFUL! and ive run into other who have done everything they are supposed to, but lose their birds because they have under 10,000 sq ft lots. I find sac to be a backwards place.
When we finally move into our new house, i plan on have 3 araucana chickens, they produce amazing blue and green shelled eggs that are fairly large. I raised them with my family in northern california, where they do amazingly well. Ive had friends over the years that have breeds that dont cope well with the summer heat and dont lay at all during the summer. From experience, Araucanas are big hardy birds that dont seem to have a problem with the heat.
My husband has never owned chickens so this will be a very new experience for him. My children love chickens and feel so proud of themselves when they help with feedings or coop cleanings or egg gathering.
Im excited i found this site! I looks like a blast!
