Hey everyone! My name is Kamilla, I'm from Oregon USA🥰I found this web-site by searching some information about my birds and decided to register so I can get a closer insight🥰

Answering sample questions will be a bit different... Because I have emus!

Last year me and my husband have moved to the apartment that is on emu farm. I was helping landlords with maintaining the farm (they're an older couple), and I fell in love with them. What are fascinating creatures emus are.

We also got chicken, geese and one duck. Unfortunately a skunk ate the rest of ducks, as I was told. Chicken breed - Ameraucanas. Geese breed - I don't know. They're white 🤷‍♀️. I had chicken when I was growing up on a farm, and we moved to the city when I was 11 or so. I always loved the farm, and birds.

Looking forward to reading the posts here and meeting people who have a great emu insight!

Welcome to BYC!

Thank you for the warm welcomes🥰How are you guys doing today? Are your chicken liking the snow (given that there is a snow in your part of the world)?

For the past few weeks we had about a meter of snow falling lol. I'm so tired of shovelling, also our outside faucet froze, so keep the birds hydrated i've been throwing snow in their bowls. They have heated buckets so it melts the snow relatively fast.

Next year I definitely need to be more prepared with the farm!😥

Ah yes I noticed that they get pretty curious when it sprinkles, but we have about 30-50cm of snow atm. They're not too enthusiastic about me filling their water bowl with snow, but what can one do😔

Emus don't mind the snow, they follow their regular paths. They started laying eggs recently, and the landlords recommended me to take the eggs away from them because it's freezing at night and the eggs get spoiled. I keep them at home at semi-cold conditions. I want to start an incubator, but still learning about them. Never hatched an emu baby! So worried!

Another thing I wonder about emus, and whether it's similar to chicken, is if they get upset/uncomfortable when you take their eggs away? I noticed with chicken, if you take their eggs everyday they tend to change nesting spots. I guess because they feel intruded? I have a suspicion this might be the case with emus too. I tried to take their eggs as fast as possible (same day) so they don't freeze overnight, but one couple doesn't lay eggs anymore😭 I think I screwed up!
