Ahoy there.

Here's a picture of the crummy dog run along my back fence. I don't have a dog, and if I did, I wouldn't cram it in there, so I was thinking of making a chickenwire roof over part of it, and building a coop for 2 or 3 hens. Then my tiny dog run becomes a luxurious chicken run.

I think I need to get a permit first, so I'm not fined for having harmless birds in my yard. (I don't have any just yet.)

Also, I live in Colorado, so conditions can range from 100 degrees with 1mph winds, to -20 blizzard with 40mph winds, and I'm worried that if I don't build their house properly, I'll freeze or cook my birds.

There are train tracks on the other side of the back fence fence as well, and I'm thinking that it might scare the living crap out of the poor things when a train goes by.

So, I thought I'd join your forum, hang around here for a while and read, and pick your birdbrains, before I do anything drastic.

Thanks for having me, and I'll do my best not to break the rules or weird people out.

We have a train running right by our house, and it doesn't freak the chickens out any more than it does the people (and we don't notice it anymore).

That would make a great chicken run!

Wecome, The chickens (depending on breed) should actually be ok down to 0. The thin featherd silky types might be less cold hardy. A sealed coop with no drafts that can be closed up tight at night to keep the bad guys out and some very good ventilation in the summer to keep cool is the way to go. Check out the coop pages. They are awesome!!!

This place is addictive!!! WARNING!!!!!

Good luck and God Bless!

You can't tell from the pic, but the chicken-sized hole on the left side of the back fence is already covered with chainlink, and the holes in the gate wont be a problem, because only about 2/3 of the dog run will end up as the hen run.

Oh, and I forgot to ask, will the birds peck at the exposed cable or the electrical thingy on the left side? Maybe I could close it off...
