Welcome to BYC! I live in the suburbs of Denver, and my chickens do just fine in the schizophrenic weather. Just don't get silkies or frizzles unless you plan on having a heater in your coop. I keep Naked Necks and they do great! As for the train, I live near a train and it doesn't phase them, neither does the lawnmower, leaf blower, wood chipper, or any of the loud tools my neighbor uses right next door on the other side of the fence from their coop. Have fun!!

I lived "just down the road" in Loveland from 1970 to 1991. Nice Country...but getting VERY OVER-CROWDED.

There are some "folks" here on BYC from Longmont. I 'spect you'll run into them here...better than "running into them" in Longmont traffic!

Any recommendations for a breed that will be tough enough for Colorado weather and a newbie level of care? I looked over the breed list, but I want some tough cookies that still make a good amount of eggs...

Also, would deep litter work ok in my climate?
 
I would recommend, without reservation, that you get Buff Orpingtons. Large Docile Chicken and a GREAT Layer. Well-insulated with plenty of golden feathers... Also can be "broody", which can help you "replenish" your own flock, as the desire or need may dictate.

Ok, I just got off the phone with one of the city planners for Longmont, (a very helpful dude, who made it clear that he personally thinks chickens aren't that big of a deal and should be allowed.) and he said that there are NO PERMITS left. The city is doing some kind of trial period where they issued around 75 permits to see if all hell would break loose because of chickens.

Sooooooo, all the permits are gone, and my choices are: Keep chickens illegally, or wait for the trial period to be over in 2011 or 2012. I don't know what to do; I feel like just doing it anyway, but if the neighbors decide to complain or something, or they get out somehow and animal control gets ahold of them, I'll have to kill or give away my birds to avoid tickets and fines.

So, sorry for peppering you guys with questions, because it doesn't look like I can have a street legal coop any time soon....

welcome to byc anyway. keep on reading and learning. It took us almost 25 years to actually get our chickens. It will go by in no time, a puny year or two...I have buff orpingtons and I love them. They go very nicely with the color of the coop.
