Hi everyone! I don't have chickens yet (I don't plan to til Spring 2027 probably) but I'm the kind of person who does a LOT of research before I start something! I plan to mostly lurk here, read and learn til that time, and i'd love to find someone living in the area who I could talk to about getting into chicken keeping in compliance with the local ordinances. (There are a few things specifically I have questions about...)
Haha, I'll answer the questions to tell who I am a little bit better
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have a lot of experience caring for animals and have helped with family members' livestock, but never had chickens of my own.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Zero
(3) What breeds do you have?
I really like Ameraucanas and that's probably what I want to get for the majority of my flock, but I'm open to other breeds if they end up being better for my setup. My wife really wants one silkie in the mix just because they're cute and she wants one she can get attached to that I'm not going to stew when it stops laying...
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I want eggs, and I think they're very fun animals to just watch, I had pet birds for most of my childhood and I always found it very entertaining just to watch them interact with each other.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love baking (I used to be a pastry chef, I got tired of that life but it's still my #1 hobby) also spending time outdoors, hiking and gardening, and I've recently gotten back into drawing (mostly bugs)
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I just live with my wife and our 2 rabbits, I work in a lab with no windows all day so that's probably why I like spending time outside on my days off.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Like I said, I'm trying to do my research before getting chickens... Every time I google a question I have, I end up finding it answered or discussed at BYC, so I figured I may as well just join here!
