Hello everyone!

I have been raising chickens for almost 1 year now. I have a Buff Orpington who has gone broody. I welcome this. I prefer chickies to hatch naturally. Last night when I lifted her up to move her inside, I noticed she was wet underneath & a bad smell.
I did not notice any broken eggs. Is this normal?

thx for any & all replies

Hi and welcome to BYC. Being wet and a bad smell is certainly not normal. Whilst you say no eggs were broken, it would be first conclusion I would reach - did she smell, well, like rotten eggs / sulphurous? . I'd suggest bathing her and getting rid of whatever gunk is there and cleaning any nesting material.

Other members may have other suggestions, so feel free to post your question on this thread - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...ody-hen-hatch-a-long-and-informational-thread

Best wishes

sorry

Hi there! Thx for the reply & link. The wetness was thin & watery, not like goopy egg. The smell was not sulphorus but more a yeasty smell.

Welcome!

Wow, that is a weird one .. I have not experienced that at all in broody hen hatches here. I do hope that you are able to get to the bottom of it.

I also hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
