hello, my name is Elizabeth and today I became the proud new owner of my very first chickens -3 beautiful black silkies (one was called a silkie frizzle though) that were hatched two weeks ago.

I am new to chickens, but not new to birds entirely as we owned ducks in the past. We thought about chickens awhile back but never took the leap. We live in a little town that allows a small number of hens only so we had to choose carefully. Upon meeting them tonight we couldn't say no...and well, we now own three LOL.

Already our girls (who are still nameless) seem to be interested in us. We have them in a warming pen in an area of the house where my mom and I can visit them often and already we've found that they seem excited to see us which is amazing! I spent the better part of today reading up on the silkie posts and I'm excited to learn more and meet others who share my love of these fluffy babies!

Hi Elizabeth, glad you're enjoying the Silkies.

Thanks for joining us!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Congrats on your new babies! Silkies sure are adorable. Make sure to pay extra attention to nutrition, Silkies need extra vitamins. And keep the hair trimmed around their eyes so they can see. They can have the tendency not to see well enough with all the feathers in their eyes and get dehydrated and low on nutrition.

Good luck with your new furry, or should I say feathered friends and welcome to our roost! :)

:hmm:):):D:welcomeHi Elizabeth! I am definitely not new to chickens, turkeys and geese. I used to own a gentle rooster called nice rooster, but he died a year ago:hit
I used to have lots of poultry too but we bought these turkeys from a market but they had chicken cholera and killed all of our chickens. Now we have 16 common chickens but are planning to sell most of the roosters because they are hurting the hens during mating. We have an orange rooster called penguin and he has a cute high pitched crow and chases after to when he sees you.

Hi guys!! Thanks for all the tips and friendliness!! My girls are now three weeks old (or close to it) and doing very well! They are vocal today because a few fruit flies got into the brooder and they were chasing them. It was the funniest thing I've seen!!
