Just poppin' in to do an introduction for myself.
I just recently discovered my passion for "farming." My name is Tyler, I'm 26yrs old, getting married to a genuine city girl in a few days (she's adjusting to country life pretty well though). I live in the foothills of NC on about 2acres of land.
It all started with the occasional trip down to the chicken coop to feed our two calves and throw out a little scratch for my dad's two dozen chickens.
Now, I grew up as a child around animals we always had 1 - 2 calves and a couple of pigs but I never cared for them, in fact as a kid I saw chickens pecking and eating each other's dead bodies and just some other things that made me not really ever want to have anything to do with chickens...
until recently... i moved back from living in San Diego for a couple of years and brought my fiance, we now both live with my parents and when my dad was in the hospital (he's disabled) i was charged with feeding and taking care of the animals...
now it fascinates and thrills me when these birds see me getting out of my car after work and they are all spread out across the cow field and they come running to the edge of the fence wanting scratch feed... so I'm IN!
My dad is disabled and he's from the old school so he has a little shack chicken coop in pretty poor condition but functional and he sells our leftover eggs to our family/neighbors for 1.50 / doz. And his chickens are awesome, but they're just standard no frills chickens (except for the bantam and the english game hen and evanrude the huge roo that I have no idea what breed he is supposed to be, but he's a great roo).
Anyway, I ordered him 25 more chicks for his b-day and I'm going to try and build a new coop using some of the designs I've found on this site (I'm not much of a carpenter, ohwell) so that our new pure rare breeds can all live together seperately and make babies for me to sell at our local small animal sale. I'm planning on taking off to farmers markets to sell our fresh cage free range chicken eggs also for 3$ a dozen to try and make a little more money to finance some coop upgrades i want to do, but mostly to just make enough money to feed them good organic feed and maybe help subsidize the cattle feed as well.
In the end, I've needed a productive hobby for a long time, and I've come back around to the agriculture thing and I'm really enjoying it right now and hope that I can stay with it. I look forward to being on this forum and being a part of this community, just from browsing it seems like everyone here is very cool. So Hi! Nice to meet you all, hope to see you around.
