I’m a new member to the chicken crew, we got 6 chicks in March! We have 5 Barred Rocks and 1 Black Australorp. So far we have had garage chicks not back yard as we were waiting for them to be fully feathered and temps to increase outside. They are moving to the coop permanently today! We recently moved to a spot with more land and are excited to grow our family herd. Currently have a black hound/lab mix who isn’t totally sure about his new sisters… and brother!
One of the chicken appears to be a rooster which we are a little unsure about.

Some early questions…
Will having only 5 ladies be an issue for keeping the rooster?
Will taking care of a rooster require additional maintenance?… clipping claws, grooming, or added space requirements
How long are eggs ok to still pick (when fertilized) before they begin to incubate?

Excited to be here!

Hi, welcome to BYC.
You can still gather, and eat your eggs.
5 hens may be plenty for your rooster. All roosters are different.
You may need to clip/file his spurs occasionally. I wrap my guys in towels and use an electric dog file. Two people can do it easier.
You should have additional space. I prefer 4 sq ft each in the coop (not including nest space) and around 15 to 20 sq ft each in the run.
Good luck. And I'll cross my fingers that you have all pullets!
