Hello, new friends!

Hi, there!

I'm Sarah, and I'm brand new to chickens. My husband decided he wanted to homestead and purchased 8 Black Australorp chicks in May.
I had NO idea how obsessed I would become and how much I would adore these birds. My husband and son have dubbed me "Chicken Mommy." If I didn't work full-time, I'd likely spend my whole day in the run with our girls. They make me laugh, and I'm pretty proud that I'm the only one who can tell them apart.

Currently, I'm trying my best to help our very flighty pullets learn that petting is a GOOD thing. They were pretty affectionate as chicks, but they've grown shy since moving from the brooder to the coop.

One day, I'd love an Americana. The beards just kill me. In the meantime, I'll settle with hoping for a couple of Easter Eggers hopefully in the next year or so :) I didn't think I'd fall for chicken math, but, oh golly, did I ever!

Outside chickens, I love books, photography, art, and hiking. Honestly, I kind of wish I could get one adventurous hen to go kayaking with me one day, but that might be a pipe dream ;)
Welcome to BYC!! I like your profile pic, it’s so pretty!

Welcome, welcome! I love that you can tell them apart by face... I have bands to teach me their faces eventually, hahaha. Can't wait to see pictures of your girls soon!
Thank you for the warm welcome!

If I can get them to stand still, I'll absolutely post!

I've tried posted a JPEG from my phone here, and it says it's not recognized as an image 🤷‍♀️ Maybe it's too big?

Welcome to BYC, Sarah. A blue ameraucana rooster to breed with your australorp girls sounds like just the thing! Think of all the cute blue and black chicks you'd hatch.
Oh, I would love that! However, it would take a LOT of convincing to get my husband (and our neighbors) onboard for a rooster :) If we ever get to move out of the suburbs, I think that's definitely a possibility!
Thank you for the warm welcome! 💙
