Welcome to BYC! So glad you are here!Kasha Chicken Lady here! My husband and I are retired in NC, and we decided to buy chickens last August. We purchased 11 Jersey Giant hens, 1 Rhode Island Red hen "Rosie", and 1 Rhode Island Red rooster, who we call "Roger". They were all in one pen in TSC for $1.00 each, because they were 2 weeks old and they wanted to move them out for new stock. We had no idea what Jersey Giants were, but we are so thrilled we bought them! My husband quickly built a great coop and enclosed a 20' x 30' run, with 7' high chicken wire. The coop is pretty impenetrable- with an automatic closing door and 2 windows with screens, and they're covered on the outside with 1/4" hardware cloth.
Let me tell you- these chickens are EATERS!!! We go through a 50# bag of layer feed in 2 weeks! But the Giants are still growing- I've read that it takes 2 years to be fully grown- they're growing a strong bone frame now. We're so proud of them, they've all started laying lovely brown eggs starting at 5 months!
