Hello everyone, my family and I are new to Chickens. This was a spontaneous adventure for our family due to my niece doing a school project last year. She hatched 4 eggs at school and took the chicks home with her mom's approval, but to everyone's surprise, 1 baby was a rooster. Due to their city ordinance, they can have the hens with regulated coops, but no rooster. So, my niece sweet-talked me into adopting her rooster, and it began lol. I could not see a benefit of having a rooster without having some hens. We started with 4 Buff Orpenington that turned into 8, then my husband did research and learned about cross-breading them. Now we have 21 Hens and 1 Rooster in search of a second rooster at the moment, with nine different breeds. Buff Orpenington, Black Australorp, Barred Rock, Black Jersey Giant, Light Brahma, Blue Lace Gold Wyandotte, Mystic Maran, Mille Fleur D'Uccle, and Russian Orloff. I may have gone a little overboard, but I could not decide which breeds I liked better. The best benefit I have experienced so far is with my 8-year-old son and his newfound responsibility caring for the chickens and making their new home. My 15-year-old is not as eager to be out with the chickens like his little brother does, but I can see he enjoys them just as much. We also have a few other pets in our family: 2 cats and 5 dogs.
