Hey there, my name is Zane. I purchased 45 chickens last year and the first group was definitely a learning experience. I lost all of my Americana right off the bat. The other ladies decided they were too different and ate them. I have one of those left and adopted a rooster of the same variety earlier this year. My gang has Rhode Island Reds, Welsummers, Barred Plymouth Rocks, a Black sex link, a Buff Orpington, a couple of Olive Eggers, and a few Easter Eggers. I may be forgetting some. I currently have 24 chickens, with 4 of them being roosters. The roosters don't fight and they all seem to get along. The decline of my flock happened partially due to having 5 Australian Shepard Husky puppies that found a love for them. I recently purchased 135 chicks to be delivered on June 16th. Those include 15 French Maran, 20 Rhode Island White, 50 Rainbow Eggers, and 50 Heavy Mix. I have a 20 acre farm(raw land) that we bought a year and a half ago. It is off grid and we don't have the power supply just yet to sustain them with heat lamps so a friend will be raising them for the first few weeks. I am excited that there is a community out here that I can reach out to and learn ideas for more coops and runs. Happy to be here.

Glad to meet you, Zane! Good luck keeping the doggoes separate from the new birds, and all the birds safe from each other and anybody else with a taste for chicken! Best wishes with all your plans!

There are helpful articles and discussions about introducing dogs to chickens (and how it doesn't always work), and building and fortifying coops. Take a look at the learning center, and try out the SEARCH button at the top of every page.
